Parts of a Plant

🌱 Parts of the Plant

Each part of a plant has a special role in its overall function. If any part of the plant is not functioning properly, it can affect the health of the entire plant. Plants have two main organ systems: the shoot system and the root system. The shoot system, which is above the ground, enables the plant to produce food through photosynthesis. The root system is located below the ground and is responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil to nourish the plant.

✏️ Activity:

Draw a line connecting the name of the plant part to the description that it matches.

🕵️‍♀️ Food Detective:

Explore your house and collect a variety of fruits and vegetables. They can be canned, fresh, or frozen. Examine each one and try to identify which part of the plant it comes from. For example, you eat the leaf of a lettuce plant, the root of a carrot plant, and the fruit of a tomato plant. Can you think of any parts of a plant that you normally don’t eat? Create a list of edible roots, stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds. Be creative!
