 Position Overview: Rural and Farm Safety Program Specialist

Reporting to the Director, Rural and Farm Safety Programming, the Rural and Farm Safety Program Specialist is an important part of a small but dynamic team. The Program Specialist is responsible for the overall operations and programming of the new Rural Safety Mobile Unit. There are two positions available.

The Rural Safety Unit will travel to rural schools, communities, fairs, and other events around the province to educate, encourage and promote rural and farm safety to students and farm families. The Safety Unit will highlight many of the hazards faced on the farm and provide educational information around mitigating and avoiding these risks. This is a great opportunity for someone that desires to work independently and enjoys travelling for extended periods of time

Primary Responsibilities

The Program Specialist will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the trailer and its programming at all times. This includes delivering the program throughout the province. You will be a key representative of Ag for Life and its program supporters. Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation and Maintenance
    • Setting up and tearing down the unit before and after programs. Keeping the unit in top condition is a must.
    • Maintaining an up to date drive logbook.
    • Keeping track of unit maintenance schedules and appointments and ensuring all equipment is in good working order at all times.
  • Program delivery
    • Preparing and presenting curriculum based material to groups of diverse audiences including, elementary to high school students, farm families and the general public.
  • Other tasks as assigned


Educational and Experience Requirements

  • Post-secondary graduate with a degree/diploma in Agriculture, or Education, or 2-year diploma (or certificate) in Occupational Health and Safety or a closely related field from a recognized academic institution.
  • CRSP certification an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers Licence

  • Task and detailed oriented, strong prioritization skills. Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal attributes, ability to create relationships in rural/urban/corporate/not for profit environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Interested in farm safety, agriculture and food and has a strong sense of commitment to the mission of Ag for Life.


Work Environment

  • Frequent travel within Alberta with the possibility of expansion into other provinces and states.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work overtime, evening and weekend hours.
