“If you don’t look after your land, it won’t look after you,” says Bill Bateman, solemnly, as his sits next to his wife, Pat, in the kitchen of their ranch house in Jumping Pound, Alberta. “My grandfather came here in 1887 from Ireland and then
homesteaded in 1894, marrying my grandma two years later. They had nine kids, three of which grew up.”
