Barley is one of Alberta’s top crops with over 4 million of Canada’s 8 million tonnes been produced in Alberta.   Over 11,000 Alberta farmers produce barley that is classified into three groups described below

Feed barley,  a class of barley, typically with high protein levels, primarily used to feed livestock.

Malt barley, a class of barley, typically with lower protein levels, suited for the production of beer and alcohol.

Food barley, a class of barley edible for human consumption. Varieties within this class can be hulless or hulled, depending on desired end use.
