Alberta Agriculture by Numbers

In 2017, Canada released the results of its 2016 Census of Agriculture, which is conducted every five years. Here are some of the highlights from Alberta:

  • Total number of farms: 40,638 – down 5 percent from 2011
  • Total farm area: 50.3 million acres
  • Land in crops: 25.3 million acres
  • Average age of farmers 55.7 – up by 2 years from 2011
  • Alberta accounts for 21 percent of all farms in Canada – second only to Ontario
  • Alberta had the highest number of cattle ranches – with 12,639 farms
